چکیده

“Human-in-the-loop” sensing or citizen sensing as a method for collecting, analysing, and mining information about events is becoming more mainstream. In this work, we aim to utilise the concept of citizen sensors but also introduce the theory of citizen actuation. Citizen sensors observe, report, and collect data – we propose by supporting these citizen sensors with methods to affect their surroundings we enable them to become citizen actuators. We outline a use case for citizen actuation in the Energy Management domain, propose an architecture (a Cyber-Physical Social System) built on previous work in Energy Management with Twitter integration, use of Complex Event Processing (CEP), and perform an experiment to test this theory. We motivate the need for citizen actuation in Building Management Systems due to the high cost of actuation systems. We define the concept of citizen actuation and outline an experiment that shows a reduction in average energy usage of 24%. The experiment supports the concept of citizen actuation to improve energy usage within the experimental environment and we discuss future research directions in this area.

Leveraging Social Media and IoT to Bootstrap Smart Environments

As we move towards an era of Smart Environments, mixed technological and social solutions must be examined to continue to allow users some control over their environment. Realisations of Smart Environments such as Smart Cities and Smart Buildings bring the promise of an intelligently managed space that maximises the requirements of the user while minimising resources. Our approach is to create ...

Citizen Observatories and the New Earth Observation Science

Earth observation is diversifying, and now includes new types of systems, such as citizen observatories, unmanned aerial vehicles and wireless sensor networks. However, the Copernicus Programme vision of a seamless chain from satellite data to usable information in the hands of decision makers is still largely unrealized, and remote sensing science lacks a conceptual framework to explain why. T...

The conceptual model of the relationship between institutional transparency, citizen trust and satisfaction (A case study of Tehran city, Iran)

Trust, along with transparency, is an important indicator of a satisfactory relationship between a government and the public. Considering transparency as the key to trust in government, the purpose of this paper is to postulate a link between transparency and trust taking into account satisfaction as a psychological factor. This paper tries to find the answer of these questions: “Is there...

Just good enough data: Figuring data citizenships through air pollution sensing and data stories

Citizen sensing, or the use of low-cost and accessible digital technologies to monitor environments, has contributed to new types of environmental data and data practices. Through a discussion of participatory research into air pollution sensing with residents of northeastern Pennsylvania concerned about the effects of hydraulic fracturing, we examine how new technologies for generating environ...

Short Paper: Citizen Sensing within a Real Time Passenger Information System

GetThere is a real-time passenger information system (RTPI) for rural areas that uses a citizen sensing approach to acquire information from public transport users. This paper describes the use of ontologies in GetThere to represent and integrate citizen sensors with data required to provide RTPI (e.g. timetable and route descriptions). The service architecture used to manage semantic sensor da...
